Study - Many Adults in Need of Sex Education

It seems many adults are in need of a crash course in sex education. The study indicated that many adults both men and women have questions about sex that have gone without being asked or without answers for years.

Sexual Illiteracy

According to Bill Taverner, director of The Center for Family Life Education at Planned Parenthood of Greater Northern New Jersey and the co-author of the book “Older, Wiser, Sexually Smarter” he feels that adults are sexually illiterate. When he spoke at his parents retirement community to a very large group of adults he was amazed and shocked at the questions asked and the amount of time (three hours) that he spent discussing sexual education topics that these adults should have been taught in school.

Kaiser Family Foundation

Researchers from the Kaiser Family Foundation said in a statement that formal sexual education is uneven. “Only 22 states and the District of Columbia mandate sex education in their public schools (35 states mandate lessons on HIV and sexually transmitted diseases). Many of those states require an abstinence focus; others leave the nuts and bolts of lesson planning to local districts, where quality varies, according to the Kaiser report.”

Conclusion

Many adults do know about their own bodies or the bodies of their sexual partners, relationships, sexual behaviors. Perhaps this is because 20, 30, 40 years ago sex was something you just did you did not talk about it.
