Generally sperm can live in a woman’s reproductive tract for three days. However this varies based on the condition of the reproductive tract, which is a factor of how close the woman is to ovulation in her cycle. The vaginal tract is somewhat acidic, and this causes the demise of the sperm. However, during the fertile phase, the woman secretes a mucus which is very amenable to the life of the sperm. The sperm swim up into the uterus using the mucus as a conduit for travel. If an egg has not yet been released, the sperm will wait inside the cervix until the time is right. Sperm have been recorded to live for up to seven days in a woman’s body under such conditions.
