Sex Education by Text?

With new technology comes new ways to provide education. This is also true for sex education as Planned Parenthood is showing us with their new texting service that allows teens to send text messages asking questions about sexual health to trained peer educators. The program called ToHealth provides the ability for teens and peer educators to connect repeatedly so teens can be sure to connect with someone who can answer their questions.
Teens can remain anonymous through their text messages which will hopefully encourage them to seek out information about sexual health and relationship issues. This is a much better option than trying to get information off the internet which is so often unreliable. The texting program is free and targeted at teens 13-19 years of age.
Currently this service is available at a few Planned Parenthood’s in the United States and Toronto is the first Canadian affiliate to join the program. They are hopeful that the success of the programs at the participating Planned Parenthood affiliates will enable other affiliates to have the texting program as well.
Technology has changed the way people communicate, especially adolescents. Teens use their cell phones as their main form of communication, not just through phone calls but texting and instant messaging as well. This reason alone gives the ToHealth program a significant chance for success.
