Durex, a company that manufactures condoms, has developed a new condom that is soon to hit the shelves in Europe. Called the CSD500, the more mainstream name for this product is the Viagra Condom even though it has nothing to do with Viagra.
The idea behind the CSD500 is to help men who have trouble maintaining their erection when they use a condom. This is much different than the oral pill Viagra which helps men with Erectile Dysfunction achieve and maintain an erection with or without a condom. The CSD500 condom is lined on the inside with a vasodilating gel that has been used in patients with angina to increase blood flow to the heart. In this case, the gel increases blood flow to the penis. In clinical trials men who used the CSD500 reported their erections seemed bigger and firmer and reported their erections lasted longer. If CSD500 does will in Europe, it will be made available in the United States.
Some people are saying the CSD500 will encourage men to use condoms which increase people practicing safe sex and reduce transmission rates of HIV and STD’s. With a condom that helps men keep their erection, the excuse of less sensitivity affecting performance won’t be able to be used by men anymore to avoid condom use. Further, firmer erections help condoms stay in place and not slip off. While Durex stated the problem with developing this product was to find a gel that did not destroy latex, the vasodilating gel does not affect or break down latex.
Condom manufacturers have been trying to find ways to make using condoms more appealing for years but have had little success outside of stressing their importance in disease prevention. A condom that helps men keep their erection could be the catalyst for a surge in men and women being more interested and willing to use condoms.
Another benefit of the CSD500 is the effect it could have on a man’s performance anxiety that often accompanies erection problems. The cycle of erection failure, fear of trying to get an erection, embarrassment, trying again, erection failure and so on could be broken by using the CSD500. Being able to maintain an erection until ejaculation when there have been previous issues often provides the boost a man needs to break the cycle and get over his performance anxiety.
It will be interesting to see how the CSD500 does in Europe and what happens if it becomes available in the United States.
